A dirt road, almost like a country road, and then the first traces of the neighbourhood beginning to take shape. We are at the beginning of the twentieth century: this picture of Via delle Alpi, seen from Piazza Caprera, tells of the birth of a district, elegant and discreet, but still considered “out of town”.
The photo is taken from Typimedia Editore’s volume “Come Eravamo Trieste-Salario”, an extraordinary account in pictures of the neighbourhood’s history, which is like a large family album.
In the early 20th century, Rome needed to expand to accommodate the new ruling class of the Kingdom of Italy. And so in 1909 Edmondo Sanjust di Teulada’s master plan was approved to expand the city beyond the Aurelian Walls. The area on which the Trieste-Salario was to be built was an expanse of fields, shacks, ditches and watercourses.
