Children wrapped in dark aprons, on which conspicuous white bows stand out, enjoying a moment of freedom in the outdoor space of the school. We are in 1943 at San Leone Magno, an institution in this neighbourhood run by the Congregation of the Marist Brothers, an order that has dedicated itself to the Christian and intellectual formation of young people all over the world since 1817.
The image, property of the San Leone Magno Institute, is taken from the volume “Come Eravamo Trieste-Salario” by Typimedia Editore. The Institute’s original seat were in Via Montebello, where the school operated from 1887 to 1956, when it was transferred to Piazza di S. Costanza. The brothers Sergio and Piersanti Mattarella, among others, studied at the school. And also the writer Edoardo Albinati, who started from his experience at San Leone Magno to write his novel ‘The Catholic School’. The novel centres on the infamous Circeo Massacre, committed in 1975 by some former students of San Leone Magno.
Also published in Typimedia Editore’s ‘Come Eravamo’ series are volumes dedicated to the districts of Montesacro, Nomentano, Monteverde and San Lorenzo.
