The Basilica di Santa Francesca Romana, also known as Santa Maria Nova, is a small treasure of exceptional beauty. Inside it preserves a stone with imprints that, according to legend, belong to the knees of Saints Peter and Paul.
Getting married in Santa Francesca Romana has a special charm, and it really feels like a journey back in time. The basilica was founded in the 13th century at the behest of Pope Honorius II, but it has been renovated over time and today has a very suggestive Baroque style that makes it unique. Striking from the first glance is the majestic Romanesque bell tower adorned with double lancet windows, in stark contrast to the 17th-century white travertine façade.

The inside of the Basilica captivates those who admire it: the gaze is immediately drawn to the sumptuous 18th century ceiling, a triumph of stuccoes, colours and beautiful sculptures that surrounds the church’s single nave. There is also a remarkable collection of valuable works, such as the 12th-century mosaics in the apse, the “Confession” group designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and the precious icon known as the “Madonna of Comfort”, dating back to the 5th century. In addition, the crypt houses the remains of St Francesca Romana, co-patron saint of Rome.
Despite being located in the historical centre, the Basilica of St Francesca Romana remains intimate and quiet, perfect for those seeking a private wedding. It can only be reached by foot and can accommodate up to 120 guests, who will be speechless just walking up to the entrance: only 400 metres from the Basilica’s portal are the Colosseum and the Imperial Forum. The church must be booked at least one year before the celebration.
