Hundreds of workers “popping up” from several floors and taking a short break from work to take a picture that will go down in the history of our neighbourhood. This incredible shot, taken from the book “Come Eravamo Nomentano” (Typimedia Editore), shows the many “workers” who in 1930 were busy constructing the imposing Aeronautica Militare building.
The building, located at no. 4 Viale dell’Università and also known as “the winged building”, was built over 90 years ago and is the first building made entirely of reinforced concrete in Italy.
Officially inaugurated on 28 October 1931, it was put up in just two years as the headquarters of the then Royal Air Force. The developer and inspirator for the building was Air Marshal Italo Balbo, who wanted a work of imperial dimensions, in the rationalist style. Behind that imposing façade, which still “observes” Sapienza students today, is the commitment and hard work of hundreds of workers, the same ones posing in this shot.
In the series ‘Come Eravamo’ (How We Were), Typimedia Editore has also published volumes dedicated to the districts: Trieste-Salario, Montesacro, Monteverde and San Lorenzo
