“Il Fungo” takes its name from the peculiar shape, resembling a mushroom, of the reinforced concrete structure built by engineers Martinelli and Varisco. It was built in 1957 as a water tower designed to collect water for watering the EUR gardens. Although the structure is still functioning as a water tower, in 1961 it was transformed into a luxury restaurant, called Quattordicesimo Piano (Fourteenth Floor), by Mario Del Monaco and became one of the most exclusive restaurants of 1960s-1970s Rome.
In 2008, the structure became part of the “Complexes of buildings of significant architectural, urban and environmental interest”, placed under the protection of the Sovrintendenza Capitolina.
The menu of ‘Quattordicesimo Piano’ changes with the season thanks to the inspirations of Riccardo and Raffaele Reggiani. Their aim to capture the details of italian tradition and relate them to our times. The plates are based mainly on fish. The wine list offers a tour of the main wineries in the Italian regions and of French Champagne. The restaurant also has a smoking room.
‘Quattordicesimo Piano’ is open from Monday to Friday for lunch and dinner and for Saturday night dinner. On Sundays the restaurant can be booked for events and ceremonies. On the ground floor, on the other hand, we find Zero Bistrò, also open for dinner on Sundays. Zero Bistrò’s proposals are ideal for breakfast, a quick lunch, an aperitif, a grilled meat dinner or an evening pizza. The pizza dough, in collaboration with “Accademia Pizzaioli”, is leavened for 48 hours. Everything is served in a charming dehor. Il Fungo awaits you at Piazza Pakistan 1a.
